The New York State Police offers an open competitive exam every 3 to 4 years. All the candidates are ranked based on their score from the written entrance exam and an eligibility list is established. The list can range into the thousands and depends on how many candidates pass the exam. The list has exceeded 25,000 for the 2013 exam.
Candidates are called for further processing in rank order. We typically conduct processing for two academy classes per year. Based upon the size of the class, we process approximately 10 candidates for 1 vacancy. This means, for example, that for a class size of 100, we will canvas around 1,000 candidates to attend a processing. Classes typically range in size from 100 to 250, depending on the number of vacancies authorized to be filled.
Do not get discouraged by your rank. Whether we will reach your rank or not depends on how long we will utilize the list, the number of retirements and separations from service, selection process attrition, and the number of vacancies authorized to be filled. The list established in 2013 was utilized for four years and we processed beyond the rank of 16,500 during that exam cycle.
Due to the fact that we might not reach your rank for a year or more in some cases, it is vitally important you keep your contact information current. We cannot hire you if we cannot reach you.
