Candidate Information

Troopers standing outside an airplane, waiting to to to LouisianaApplying to become a New York State Trooper is a long process and one that demands your full attention as well as your patience. Our hiring list is typically in effect for 3 to 4 years and we have reached candidates ranked in upwards of 19,500 in the past. This means that even if you do not hear from us immediately after the exam, it does not mean that you will never hear from us.

We cannot predict when you might be called for further processing based upon your rank from the written exam. There are many factors that affect how quickly we move through the list and several of them are constantly changing and are out of our control.

The next phase after the written exam is the physical ability testing. Most likely, you will only have 3 to 4 week's notice before the test, which is not enough time to get into shape in order to pass. It is important that you stay in good physical condition while you are waiting to hear from us.

It is also critically important that you keep us updated with your contact information. If you move or change phone numbers and we cannot reach you, then we cannot hire you. A link to update your information is provided under the Candidate Information menu on this website.

If you have questions at any time during the process, feel free to contact your local recruiter.
